Joohan Kim Halil Berberoglu Xianfan Xu Purdue University School of Mechanical Engineering West Lafayette, Indiana 47907 E-mail: [email protected] Abstract. We discuss laser fabrication of microstructures in photoetchable glass ceramics called Foturan (Schott Company, Elmsford, NY). A KrF excimer laser (l5248 nm, t525 ns) is used for surface micromachining, and a femtosecond laser (l5800 nm, t580 fs) is used for fabricating 3-D structures. Important aspects of the machining, such as depth of machining resulting from different laser processing parameters and threshold laser fluences, are presented. A detailed analysis of the absorption process of both lasers in photoetchable glass ceramics is provided. © 2004 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers. [DOI: 10.1117/1.1759330]

Fabrication of High-Aspect-Ratio Microstructures Using Excimer Lasers

An excimer laser micromachining system is developed to study the process in fabricating high-aspect-ratio microstructures. Specifically, the study experimentally examines process efficiency and the impact of changing major laser operating parameters on the resulting microstructural shapes and morphology. The materials considered in the study include glass, silicon, and aluminum. The ablation or...

Fabrication and Investigation of Se-Ge Glass-Ceramics in the Presence of Ga and Sn Additives

The Chalcogenide glasses were fabricated by melting and quenching techniques in the Se-Ge system at the presence of 1mol% Ga and 3, 5, and 7mol% Sn. Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) analysis was conducted to extract the heat treatment of the samples. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analysis was also performed in a range of 2-16µm. The Glass samples were heat-treated at 450...

The formation of moulds for 3D microstructures using excimer laser ablation

Fabrication by the ‘Laser-LIGA’ process of three-dimensional structures for micro-fluidic devices is investigated. Polymer moulds are formed by projection ablation using an excimer laser operating at 248 nm wavelength. The moulds are replicated by electroforming — as in conventional X-ray LIGA — to produce fixed and freely moving nickel microturbine parts with heights of 150 lm, wall angles of ...

Femtosecond Laser Fabrication of Monolithically Integrated Microfluidic Sensors in Glass

Femtosecond lasers have revolutionized the processing of materials, since their ultrashort pulse width and extremely high peak intensity allows high-quality micro- and nanofabrication of three-dimensional (3D) structures. This unique capability opens up a new route for fabrication of microfluidic sensors for biochemical applications. The present paper presents a comprehensive review of recent a...

Fabrication of high-aspect ratio, micro-fluidic channels and tunnels using femtosecond laser pulses and chemical etching.

We present novel results obtained in the fabrication of high-aspect ratio micro-fluidic microstructures chemically etched from fused silica substrates locally exposed to femtosecond laser radiation. A volume sampling method to generate three-dimensional patterns is proposed and a systematic SEM-based analysis of the microstructure is presented. The results obtained gives new insights toward a b...
